"Faithless Sleep" gets the nod as the best track due to its eerie swells of what sound like tone pedal guitar. Penrod is the fictional "Penrod Schofield", a preteen whose misadventures were anthologized in a collection of humorous drawings by Pulitzer Prize-winning author "Booth Tarkington". He is portrayed on the outer LP jacket in two cover illustrations hand-drawn by "Gordon Grant".
The four other musicians in the album were not session guys using pseudonyms, as has sometimes been speculated by collectors, but "Tim Dawe"'s band, were keyboardist "Arnie Goodman", drummer "Claude Mathis", electric guitarist "Chris Kebeck", and bassist "Don Parrish". "Arnie Goodman", is brother of violinist "Jerry Goodman", famous for playing in the late-'60s Chicago Rock group "The Flock", and later as a member of the "Mahavishnu Orchestra" with guitarist "John McLaughlin".

Many releases on the "Straight Records" label had a direct connection to "Frank Zappa" and/or "Herb Cohen", whether the artists (such as "Tim Buckley") were also managed by "Herb Cohen", or whether the musicians had at times played with "Frank Zappa" (like "Captain Beefheart" and one-time "Mothers of Invention" bassist "Jeff Simmons"). It was a similar deal with Penrod (Straight Records STS1058, 1969), which was produced by "Jerry Yester" ("Zal Yanovsky"'s replacement in "The Lovin' Spoonful" ), who'd issued a late-60s Psychedelic cult classic on "Straight Records" with then-wife "Judy Henske", (also in Psychedelic Folk-Rock band "Farewell Aldebaran"). "Jerry Yester" and "Judy Henske" were also managed by "Herb Cohen", and "Jerry Yester" had also produced or co-produced two late-'60s albums for fellow "Herb Cohen" client "Tim Buckley", "Goodbye and Hello" and "Happy Sad". When "Herb Cohen" was considering having "Tim Dawe" cut an album, he sought out "Jerry Yester"'s input.
"Tim Dawe", believes "Jerry Yester", was probably first seen by "Herb Cohen" one night at the famed Los Angeles club "The Troubadour", as "that's where Herbie found a lot of his artists.

"Herb Cohen" called me and said, "Listen man, I saw this group at the hoot. I want you to go down to San Diego and listen to them, and see if we need to make a record of them". Judy and I went down [to San Diego to see Dawe], we were still together then. As it turns out, they were very good. So it was with some relief" that Jerry took the job of producing the album.
When he heard "Tim Dawe" and his band, remembers "Jerry Yester", "I said, 'This is going to be a piece of cake.' I don't know how long they'd been together, but they were pretty tight. They had their parts down. They'd rehearsed the stuff a lot, and it was like record-ready. I remember taping them on a really early cassette machine in a place where they rehearsed, and listening to it, it just seemed like it was taken off a record. So it seemed like not a lot of work to do".
In the studio, "Jerry Yester" continues, "it took a very short time to do. Maybe a couple of weeks, and we were finished with everything—mixing and mastering and everything. There might have been a couple of things where I suggested something here and there, but they were pretty together. Getting their sound was just no problem, because they were so well-rehearsed. We just set up the mikes and bingo, it was like one- or two-take kind of stuff. The guitar player was really good and really proficient—none of the problems usually associated with guitar players!" he laughs.

Dawe himself, "Jerry Yester" adds, was "a really nice fellow and easy to get along with. He seemed unlikely as a rock'n'roll singer. His approach was just way different than anybody else. He had a real kind of formal-sounding voice, is the only way I can put it." Though Dawes's vocal style has sometimes been compared (by the relatively few people who've heard and written about Penrod) to Tim Buckley, perhaps because of the Yester/Straight association, to Jerry "it never struck me that way at all. Tim [Buckley] was real moody and a lot more bohemian. Tim [Dawes] just seemed crisp and such an upstanding guy. I'm not saying that [Buckley] wasn't. But [Buckley] really had no regard at all for convention. And [Dawe] could have been a scoutmaster".
The Penrod album was in some respects so eclectic as to defy classification. Parts were reminiscent of earnest mid-to-late-1960s Folk-Rock singer-songwriters like "Eric Andersen", "Phil Ochs", and "Tim Hardin", yet with edgier, harder-rocking Psychedelic-influenced backing. "Sometimes Alone" and "Didn't We Love" climaxed with Psychedelic distorted dissonance, yet "Some Other Time" featured gorgeous classical-influenced keyboards by "Arnie Goodman". And "Jerry Yester" added some orchestration to the Folk-Rock-Psychedelic core. "That was still pretty early in my orchestration career, and I liked to do it every time I could," he notes. "I didn't force it on people, certainly, but if I thought it could use it, I suggested it".

Perhaps the standout cut on the record is the seven-and-a-half-minute "Junkie John" a brooding downbeat tale set against haunting "Farfisa Compact Organ", wailing backup vocals, and a languid yet mordant Jazzy groove. "The best line in that [is] in the spoken intro that he does—'when he walked into a room, you got the feeling that somebody just left'", feels "Jerry Yester". "I've used that over the years, 'cause I've known people like that. We've done this in order to better illustrate these beautiful pieces to our clients' during viewing and to show how the negatives translate.
The majority of the Eve Bowen photos were taken in one session on the train journey to Washington U.S.A during the Beatles first ever U.S tour in 1964 and offer a lovely insight into what seem to be very playful men. Most of the negatives were acquired as a group and several have been previously illustrated online with the consent of the vendor. Even among a wealth of unlikely idiosynchracies this album stands out, due not just to the timeless nature of its music, but also because of its unlikely origins. It's hard to imagine a locale less appropriate for intimate basement folkrock than Dallas, Texas, 1971.
The "Virgin Insanity" was created mainly to record the album, although it turned out to exist beyond that escapade. The main engine behind the group and album was "Bob Long"; songwriter, arranger, guitarist and coordinator, who after an unsuccessful attempt to break into the West Coast music business had returned to Dallas determined to produce something tangible. Living under meagre conditions the financing of an album, even a budget custom pressing, was difficult. "Bob Long" made ends meet by working as a department store Santa Claus in late 1970, which is where he met his future wife and future Virgin Insanity member, Eve. Unemployed after the Christmas holidays, Long was offered another job in the glamorous sewage and wastewater business, which would prompt the LP title, "Illusions Of The Maintenance Man".

In early 1971 the couple rebuilt their Plano apartment into a makeshift recording studio, using stacked chairs and draped blankets to create a "soundproof" tent-like structure. A Radio Shack tape recorder was on hand to capture the music, which was put together via "bouncing" tracks in classic do-it-yourself fashion. Apparently unconcerned about the audio deterioration with each subsequent track bounce, every instrument and vocal was recorded by itself. Fortunately, the album is relatively sparse in its instrumentation. Apart from guitar, bass and vocals courtesy of Bob and "Eve Long", two college student friends were brought in to play second guitar ("Wayne Lamar Boggs III") and drums ("Jud Chapin").

The 10 songs that form "Illusions Of The Maintenance Man" (Funky Record Co. 72411, 1971)had been written over a 2,5-year period; "Livin' Lives" was written when recording was already in progress, while "Touch The Sky" and "Time Of Sorrows Gone Soon" had been composed shortly before. "Charity", the earliest song, was written by Bob as an 18-year old in 1968. "Don't Get Down" refers to the frustrating experience of trying to get into the music business, while "Once" is an anti-Vietnam War song; apart from these the vast majority of the material is personal love songs.
One of the album's assets is the strong consistence it displays, due partly to the distinctive sound created by the home studio, but also from a deliberate effort to create a concept album, with songs selected to function both as single pieces and as part of a greater whole.

While each listener will come out with a different experience, certain keywords keep recurring when the album is discussed; such as "warmth", "atmosphere", "purity". Comparisons to the sparse, nocturnal moods of the third "Velvet Underground" LP have been made by more than one listener, no doubt prompted by a similarity in instrumentation as well as a certain resemblance in the male/female vocal styles. As is often the case, this was a coincidence rather than a case of inspiration, and when asked recently Bob Long confessed never even having heard the VU album: "...Off the top of my head the most influential musical folks at the time we made the recording were; "The Beatles", "Moody Blues", "George Gershwin", "Woody Guthrie", "Carlos Jobim", "Hank Williams", "Sergio Mendez", "Crosby Stills and Nash", America -- pretty well pop stuff at the time. I'm not sure I can peg another group or album that we sounded like, the attempt was to create something truly original".

After a master was cut in Dallas in mid-1971, 200 copies were pressed by a custom operation, a small run even for a vanity pressing, where 500 is the usual minimum. Furthermore, an actual printed sleeve exceeded the Virgin Insanity budget, and the band opted for rubber-stamping their monicker and album title manually onto the plain cardboard sleeves, making each copy unique. Sales were confined to friends and family, although "Bob Long" managed to get scattered local radio stations in Texas interested, no mean feat under the circumstances. Nevertheless, the 200 copies took some time to sell out.Psychedelic-Rocknrollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15153748669370894960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6199670921824529733.post-82960439550707615322015-04-21T01:33:00.004+02:002017-01-22T15:24:57.007+01:00Phafner - Overdrive (ULTRA RAW HARD-ROCK PSYCHEDELIC US 1972)

Phafner was formed in Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1969, and immediately attracted local attention by playing a hard-edged, drug-induced brand of Rock'n'roll.
The band consisted of two sets of brothers, "Dale Shultz" (guitar, vocals), "Tommy Shultz" (bass guitar), "Greg 'Smitty' Smith" (vocals, harmonica), "Steve 'Spider" Smith" (lead guitar), along with "Steven 'Gus' Gustafson" on drums.
In 1971, Phafner decided to record an album of their own original material, so they got together in a local basement studio and put six songs together for what became the Overdrive album (Dragon Records no #, 1972).
